Week 2: Joy

OK.  So truth be told, I knew this week’s subject a couple days before everyone else.  I had a shorter time frame to capture “electricity” and planned my post last week, so I knew “joy” was on the menu Sunday night.  And my first thought was “holy cow, the world is on my side” because we were flying out on Monday and I knew that I would get a fabulous “joy” shot while on vacation.  Until I got there.

I became afraid to carry my camera with me.  The day trips we had planned either involved water [which could lead to Mac drowning] or leaving my bag unattended [which could lead to Mac walking away on someone else’s shoulders] and even though I have him insured, this gal wasn’t about to take any chances.  Sadly, Paco wasn’t cutting it.  On day three, I sucked it up and carried Mac Daddy to the beach.

I’ve read several different places that taking any camera to the beach is a no-no.  The sand can scratch your lens, who knows what the salty air will do and then there’s the chance of losing it in the ocean.  And don’t even think about changing lenses.  When we hit the beach, my stomach curled.  “Why did I bring Mac?  Stupid girl.” A game plan was born: take some shots with Mac and put him away – Paco can come out and play the rest of the time.

Let me say how frickin happy I am I took Mac to Cockleshell Bay with us.  So frickin happy.  Seriously frickin happy.  Did I mention frickin happy?

Here is my joy:

Week 2: Joy

Joyous indeed!  Being on a beach with the sunshine and not-brutally-hot temps in the West Indies?

Yes please!!

That’s my friend Alan.  Checking out the view right after we threw down our bags.  I tried a few different shots and settled on this one, with him centered… I dig.  I dig.  I dig. I dig.  I want to go back.  Right now.

Now if you haven’t visited the WPC Flickr Group, you must.  Go there now.  There are so many people ready for a 2011 challenge and so many wonderful photos posted to the group – I have smiled at every “joy” picture I’ve come across so far.  Also, I set up a new Challenger Roll where you can visit challengers’ photostreams and personal blogs – there’s a lot of cool stuff out there so if you have time, click through the list.

Now to continue the fun: Week 3’s subject is CONTROL.  (And I have no idea what I’m going to do.  Random selection can suck it right now.)  Good luck to everyone and I can’t wait to see what clever shots [I never would have thought of] are submitted next week.  Happy snapping!

Victoria - Oh, beautiful joy! Wonderful!
So glad you took Mac with you. Did the BIg Kahuna have a name change?

January 12, 2011 - 8:46 am

Brooke - Nope. Brooke had a big upgrade! Mac is a Canon 7D. *swoon*

Wendi @ Bon Appetit Hon - Boo, despite my envy of your trip this is a wonderful picture. I’d give almost anything to be standing on that beach right now.

January 12, 2011 - 10:44 am

Eric Killmeier - I love how you’ve named your cameras. I need to find a name for my cheap little Olympus E620. Maybe “Ollie.”

Melissa - ok… 1st… great pic. And I am jealous jealous jealous.
2nd… CONTROL? really? ugh!

January 12, 2011 - 11:55 am

Elizabeth - I dig this shot, too! Sure wish you had asked me to come along….

I apologize, now, that my JOY shot was taken last Fall, during football season. But, you know my time and mind are a little occupied. So, rather than miss out on all the fun, I decided to cheat a little and submit my football pic (which wasn’t the best, but I was in a hurry).
I will try real hard to figure something out for this coming week’s topic. And, yes, random can suck. But, we will forge ahead.
Thanks for giving me a little leeway and wiggle room on this! I hope to jump in, full force, in the next week or so, when things settle a bit.

Have a great day and think back to the fun on the beach!

Brooke - Melissa, I think it sucks too but that’s the point. I have NO idea what I’m going to do. But I will have something… even if it sucks.

Jason Gouger - Daaah, I’m a little late on Joy, I’ll have to get mine up tonight. Life got in the way :(

January 13, 2011 - 10:52 am

Anamaris - Boo! I love those clouds, they look like they’re coming at me. I think I can feel the boat moving!

January 13, 2011 - 10:59 am

Brooke - I thought it was cool how the clouds turned out. I think that’s a little lens magic; I had it zoomed all the way out at 18mm and I think it put a bend on the sky. Don’t worry – I felt the boat move too.

January 13, 2011 - 11:56 pm

Ciara - OMG! I love love LOVE this. The way the sun is hitting the sea is absolutely beautiful! I’m glad that you brought Mac to the beach as well! :)
