Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and ask, “Were you really a sorority girl?”  I really feel like I don’t fit the sorority girl mold, the idea that’s been shaped in our minds as the stereotype.  But then I think back, honing in on moments that happened on late nights in the house kitchen, the dance parties we had just because the music started playing, the hugs I’ve shared with my sisters since college and I realize that being a sorority girl is anything but stereotypical.  It’s whatever you make it.

You make the decisions.  You make the experience.  Those decisions and experiences make you a better you.

Of course, all of this reflection came about on Sunday.  I had the pleasure of meeting three women, three best friends, that probably wouldn’t have met one another if they weren’t sorority sisters.

Fate is funny like that.

I might have 10 years on them, but watching them together – laughing at inside jokes, teasing each other – that’s what I remember, that was the best part of the experience.  The friendships.   The friendships I had then.  The friendships I still have now.  The friendships they’ll have 10 years from now.

This was so much fun.  So so much fun.  I knew it would be but at the same time it felt so good to be leaving them with a smile on my face, to have spent the time we did together, to share the stories we had told.

Madison, Sarah and Kelsey are smart, beautiful women and have so much to look forward to.  Always keep your eyes to the future, ladies – you never know what goodness is yet to come.

J. Smith - Love these so much. They look so happy! And i love the post too (for obvious reasons — would you have EVER met such a random work-song-singing, wanna-be crafter, mish mash of a person like me if not for our dear sorority? And even if we did meet do you THINK we would have known how much we have in common? I don’t think so!) Of course it got me all nostalgic and thinking “It is not entirely a flower, a monogrammed ring, or a golden badge. And it is not entirely an institution, a creed, a legacy, an obligation, or a way of life. If you’re going to insist that it is something at all……” And then I misted up in my office. And realized I’m totally a stereotype. I just cried about a poem I haven’t heard in its entirety in 5 years. ;)

Brooke - Pref. The only thing I really like about recruitment. Love that poem we used to share. Each person taking their part, taking the hand next to them… it’s only supposed to be heard in entirety when you have another hand to hold. (Oh god. Total sorority girl moment. Must. Find. Tissue.)
