Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some active Sigma Kappas. Sigma Kappa was a big part of my collegiate life. Who am I kidding, it still is. But getting to meet and talk with the women who are experiencing it now is special. To hear their stories, how they love the friendships they’ve made, how they look forward to their first recruitment on the inside… it makes me daydream about my college years. When I met Sidney, I wanted to wrap her in a blanket of violets – I told her to embrace the opportunities she has and enjoy everything about it.
After finally scheduling a time to meet, Sidney asked if she could bring her little sister. Apparently, little sister got wind of our upcoming photography session and asked to join. I find it heartwarming that Sidney, who is six years senior to Veronica, obliged. Siblings, no matter how far apart in age, don’t always see eye to eye. Experienced that with my own brother who is almost eight years older than me. But I remember the times he was selfless, did something to include me or even did something just for me. I’m sure Veronica will remember these moments too.
In the short time we spent together, it was obvious that Sidney loves her sister. Veronica told me about how awful middle school was – Sidney told her it only gets better. Veronica mentioned she had a new iPhone – Sidney reminded her she’s spoiled as she smiled. Veronica would skip ahead of us – Sidney reminded her to be careful and not go too far. This is what big sisters do. They keep you in check.
Sidney would lay her keys and phone off to the side when we found a place to shoot – Veronica would set her newer iPhone right next to her sister’s. This is what little sisters do. Because they want to be like their older counterparts. I remember doing this. In the form of listening to Welcome to the Jungle and trying to memorize the words to impress my big brother.
Two beautiful girls that get share everything about themselves as they grow up. Remind each other of the times you enjoyed one another’s company. Look back on your sisterly disputes and find comfort that nothing separates you. Think back on the memories you made while vacationing in Disney World – I do hope you both had a great time with your family during the holiday. I also hope that Veronica knows who Billy Crystal is now.
