Mini Walk About

At lunch yesterday, I hit the pavement in downtown Louisville with two of my co-workers, all three of us wielding our dSLRs.  I often go for walks by myself, wherever I please, taking pictures of whatever I want but being with people makes it better.  Much better.  Much more fun.  Because you have someone besides yourself to talk to.  You don’t look [as] crazy.  And I don’t exactly know how, but I sense that I feed off their creativity.

This slim jim is AmyHasBangs.  She’s playing along in the weekly challenge so you’ll have to check out her flickr page. You’ll also see more than her shadow tomorrow because she modeled for me for “red.”  I’m stoked about this, internet.

Out&About @ Lunch

These painted pigs belong to my PodMate who is Almost Crafty.  She too is playing in the weekly challenge.  As well as 365 days of self-portraits [which seems like a horrible idea but she's so good at it].  PodMate has a full throttle flickr page.  You should totally check out her knitting too – so many cute creations.

Out&About @ Lunch

And here’s yours truly.  Won’t be wearing flip-flops for too much longer.  Boo.

Out&About @ Lunch

We all work in advertising yet none of us are creatives.  So we get out and flex our creative muscles with our cameras.  I wonder what the creative folk do during lunch?  Maybe they do the opposite like us and play in excel spreadsheets for shats and giggles.  No, that would be just weird.

Out&About @ Lunch

So we’re out on our mini walk about.  I say “mini” because we were only gone for about 40 minutes and 3 blocks away.  I’ve been on this route many times.  Many many times.  Being with pals made me try new things.  The Old Spaghetti Factory proved to have some potential.

Out&About @ Lunch

And the sun – oh the sweet light.  For some reason unknown to me, I keep shooting into the sun.  And I love it.  Give me more.

Out&About @ Lunch

Come winter time, I’m going to have to figure out how to set my camera for overcasted skies again.  I’m betting it takes 2,000 photos for me to figure it out.  That sounds about right.

Das Boot

The hubs frequents a local watering hole called Flannigans.  He and his buddies are regulars; they sit at the same table, they drink from handmade mugs with their names on them and can communicate with their fantastic waitress Amanda without moving their lips.  Regulars, alright.

Last week the hubs tried to convince me to go with him to his favorite little bar.  I like going with him because the food is super good and they usually have BBC Bourbon Barrel Stout on tap which ends up making my meal even better.  But I didn’t.  I can’t remember what I did instead.  Anywho, last week during Pint Night (a microbrew is usually introduced and is served in a souvenir glass) Flannigans celebrated Oktoberfest.  I’m still a little confused why because they’re an Irish pub, but who wouldn’t want to celebrate the marriage of a Bavarian king 200 years ago?

The staff was dressed in Bavarian attire (the hubs said Amanda looked more like the St. Paulie Girl than a German bier wench), and Warsteiner was the beer of choice for Pint Night.  The souvenir glass?  A boot.  The hubs was excited, he was going to have his very own boot glass.

We affectionately refer to it as “Das Boot.”

Das Boot

I do not believe any more Warsteiner will be in Das Boot.  If I know the hubs, it will probably be a domestic.  A litre of American beer – blasphemy?  Maybe, but who cares.  Das Boot now proudly sits on our little wine bar for the world to see [mostly because it doesn't fit in my kitchen cabinets].

DHTB: Part Three

This post was posted for no other reason than to make you jealous.  Yes, you heard right, another completely selfish post.

Today was Bacon Day.  One pound of bacon, two meals, three dishes.  Nom.  Before, I said we’d eat at 5:30.  I lied.  Because we couldn’t wait until 5:30.  The grill was warming up at 4:45.  And I was happy.

I figured since I spent a couple hours actually cooking, I’d show you the outcome.  So internet, feast your eyes on the deliciousness that was born from my kitchen:

Figure 1. Loaded Potato Salad (contains bacon bits).  Could also be considered food of the gods.  It’s that good.

It

Figure 2. Crockpot Green Beans (contains bacon renderings).  My kitchen smells like a country kitchen now.  I want to capture the smell in bottle and spray it all around when people visit.

It

Figure 3. Mesquite Grilled Chicken (doesn’t contain bacon).  It’s amazing what a little marinating can do.  Because these tasted super yummy.  This will be tomorrow’s lunch.

It

Figure 4. Crescent Rolls (no bacon here either).  Thank you Pillsbury.  I’m not exactly sure how they get so much happiness in a can but they sure are good at it.

It

I have no room for dessert.  None.  I do believe a nice bowl of icecream will be sitting in front of me later this evening.  Icecream makes football better.  If haven’t tried it, you should.  But I’m stuffed to the gills.  And it feels so good.

katie - it’s too early in the morning to want food like this, but of course, I do. The loaded potato salad looks amazing.

Don't Hate The Bacon

Part One

This is a completely selfish post.  Completely.

My friends know about my bacon obsession.  I can’t say that they understand.  I have a love for all things pork.  I even have a pork hierarchy; I’ll save that for another day though.  But I will tell you that bacon takes the bacon on the hierarchy – it’s numero uno and will always be.

It Is Bacon Day

This morning [which was really more like noon] I needed the food of the gods and fried up a pound of deliciousness.  And consumed half of it immediately.  The plan was to save the other half to season up my turkey sandwiches and/or cut into bits and sprinkle on top of a frozen pizza/baked potato/salad/frozen pizza throughout the week.

It Is Bacon Day

But then a bright idea struck – let’s make this Bacon Day.  Bacon for breakfast [which was more like lunch] and bacon for dinner.  I tell ya, I have just been a G-E-N-I-U-S lately!

It Is Bacon Day

So the other half was chopped into bits (Jim Gaffigan refers to it as the fairy dust of the food community) and mixed into mayo, sour cream, cheese and chives.  And then stirred into potatoes.  This is the only thing I make that I know the hubs really likes.  Because he eats every morsel of the left overs.  I love bacon, he loves potatoes.

I took some of the renderings (grease just sounds so negative) and dumped it in a crockpot of green beans.  Add a little onion and S&P and it’s party time.  I saved the rest of the renderings for a rainy day.  Because that’s what southerners do.

It Is Bacon Day

Don’t try to deny the Bluegrass State it’s stake as a southern state.  I hate being thrown into the Midwest; half the states in this country are in the Midwest.  If not The South, then Upland South.  Throw me a bone.

The chicken breasts are marinating and I’ll be tossing those on grill come 5:30.  That gives those green beans a few hours to get to know the bacon renderings, if you know what I mean.  I can’t remember the last time I made meal that had two sides.  Hell, I might even pop open a can of crescent rolls come dinner time.

Today is a joyous day.  Today is Bacon Day.

Part Two

Now the doggins know a good thing when the smell it.  And they really like it when I cook.  Because I’m messy.  There’s no getting around that one.

Chevy the BDD rightfully took her spot next to me as I cooked.  On bacon days, her duty is to clean the floor.  She does a fantastic job.  I don’t have to worry about bacon grease being on the tile, just dog slobber.  And they say a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s, right?

It Is Bacon Day

Chase, she’s more of the instant gratification type.  She’s above licking the floor.  She stares.  And inches a little closer.  And stares some more.  And gets a little closer.  And keeps on staring.  “Where’s my  bacon, Food Lady?”

It Is Bacon Day

She’s so darn persistent – how can I say no that furry little face.  She only wants a nibble.  More like the whole plate.  “Food Lady, my patience is wearing thin.  Hand over the bacon and no one gets hurt.”  I gave her only a nibble.  Chase does not want a belly ache and neither does this Food Lady.

It Is Bacon Day

Maybe she’ll like me better than the hubs today.  Just maybe…

Funny People

I woke up bright and early to head down to the Waterfront to participate in Louisville’s Memory Walk today.  And for a while I was thinking I was the only alumna that was going to show.  But they were just running a little behind.  I’m glad they showed because I got spend time with some of the funniest ladies I know.  Every time I visit with them, I always end up having a great time.  Because they’re so funny.

I went to college with these beautiful ladies.  They had me laughing back then too.  They just don’t hold back.

Memory Walk: Julie & Michelle

This one, she clowns on everyone, says ridiculous things, throws up gang signs and then will sing you to sleep.  She has an amazing voice.

Memory Walk: Julie & Michelle

The tall one (I guess you can’t tell she’s tall here but you can take my word for it), well, she pretty much does the same thing.  Except for the gang signs and singing.  But she can put on a good song and dance show.  And fiercely walk the runway.

Memory Walk: Julie & Michelle

This morning they were at it.  At each other too.  Which made for good entertainment.  I’m getting the evil eye… I can’t remember if I’m being joked on or being sung too.  Or both.  Who knows.

Memory Walk: Julie & Michelle

And then tries to look all sweet and innocent.  ”Please child!”

Memory Walk: Julie & Michelle

I love how they don’t get on my case about the camera.  I really do.  There are so many people who scream “Don’t take my picture!”  But not these funny ladies.  They just keep the laughs coming and their smiles bright.  Thanks ladies!

katie - it’s always nice to have friends that don’t shove the camera away. makes for a boring world if you can’t take pictures of your friends.
